Recent find from a prominent Northern Virginia estate. Individually, these 1939 New York World's Fair commemorative plates are extremely scarce. Through our research, we have not found that a complete set of 12 has ever been offered; at least not recently. Each is 10 1/2 in diameter and each is in excellent, near pristine condition with no cracks, chips, crazing, or stains.
The glaze has a wonderful sheen, the cobalt blue coloring is consistent and deep, and the extensive gold embellishments are strong and complete. No real evidence of use. An absolutely stunning and extremely scarce set. These were commemorative plates recognizing the New Jersey Building during the 1939 New York world's fair. The front-side, center decorative image is the Seal of the State of New Jersey.
A hand written document was included with these plates indicating that they once belonged to the New Jersey State Treasurer, which at the time would have been William H.
