Set Of 6 MID 19th Cent Rose Medallion 8 Dinner Plates Flowers Birds Butterflies
These pieces descended in the Forbes family of Boston. That is the same Forbes family involved with, and who made their fortune through the China trade in the 1800's. This listing is for a set of six 8 mid 19th century Rose Medallion dinner plates. Each is decorated with a central motif of a bird and peony, a ring of gold surrounded by four butterflies, and four surrounding panels, each decorated with flowers and what I believe are Phoenix birds. There are subtle variations in the design on each of the hand painted plates.
The hand painted decoration has very nice detail. Five of the plates have only very minor enamel loss or wear. I will try to photograph everything clearly. The sixth plate seems to have gotten the most use.
That one still looks pretty but when you look up close, you can see some damage to the enamel, especially the to the yellow areas for some reason. That plate also has three small rim chips. The bottom rings of these plates are kind of crude and gritty. One plate has some chipping along the bottom ring, but I believe it probably came out of the kiln that way. These plates are not marked in any way. These have always been together. I will be listing other dishes and cups from this set of antique Rose Medallion.
