We believe these twelve plates are early 1820's to 1840's Coalport dinner plates by Stephen Lawrence. The plate is 10 in diameter and displays elaborately molded rim and border panels in a rich cobalt blue and gold gilt. The panels have finely painted bouquets of flowers. The center of each plate displays a different grouping of fruit. These plates are not signed and are attributed to Coalport and Stephen Lawrence.
Stephen Lawrence was a gifted flower and fruit painter who worked at Coalport from 1820 to 1846. For the age of these plates, the condition is very good to excellent with no chips, cracks, or crazing. The plates have wear to the gold trim along the rim and interior gold band.
Two of the plates also have gold wear to the floral panels. We believe these plates were acquired from the store Plummer Ltd located on 7 and 9 East 35th St near Fifth Ave. This company was listed in the city directory in 1888, listed under china and tableware, and was more prolific advertising from the 1920s. In a 1930 Antiques Magazine, there is an article about Plummers Ltd entitled Museum Pieces From A Staffordshire Museum.
The article states they are importers of modern and antique china and glass. 12 Circa 1840s English Coalport Cobalt Blue Hand Painted by Stephen Lawrence. Get Supersized Images & Free Image Hosting.
