Thomas Bewick's woodcuts are well known and one of his tailpieces in the'Book of British Birds' shows an old man standing by a gravestone, a boy with a hoop, and buildings in the background. The gravestone is engraved with the text'Vanitas, Vanitatum, Omnia Vanitas', and the woodcut is doubtless intended to demonstrate'Crabbed Age and Youth'.

A date of about 1820 seems likely, and Benjamin Adams has been suggested as a possible maker. The pattern is usually known as'Gravestone'. " Also see pp 105-109, "The Hackwood family of potters covered two generations in the period 1807 to 1855, and they produced several miniature wares. 2 Doris Lechler,'English Toy China,' Figure 206, pp 78, 192;. Someone started calling (this set) kite flyer and this name will stick.

This scarce child's miniature Dinner Set is in an underglaze deep blue print of a scene of an old man dressed in Colonial style clothes, standing by a gravestone watching a boy fly a kite. A boy on the right is rolling a hoop. A brick wall runs through the center of the picture with a house, church, and trees in the background. Several pattern names are used for this child's miniature Dinner Set:'KITE FLYER' is the most common name, however, scholars also referred to it as'CRABBED AGE and YOUTH,''OLD AGE and CARELESS YOUTH,' and'GRAVESTONE.
