Oriental stone refers to the inspiration drawn from Chinese and East Asian ceramics, which were highly sought after in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries. English potters aimed to replicate the deep blue designs on white porcelain that were characteristic of Chinese export wares. They used materials like ironstone or semi-porcelain, which were more affordable and durable alternatives to true porcelain, to create flow blue patterns with an "Oriental" aesthetic.
