TATSUZO SHIMAOKA DINNER PLATE With FABULOUS COMPLEX JAMON ZOGAN PATTERN With BOX (1)

For your consideration is a FABULOUS DINNER PLATE BY TATSUZO SHIMAOKA (1911 - 2007). It has a very complex pattern with multiple Jamon Zogan rope impressed patterns which, in this example, I refer to as Honeycomb around the rim in a cream/ brown color and a blueish background pattern in a Perpetual Diagonal pattern in the center well area. Superimposed over the blue field are 3 Medallions depicting a frequently used design by Shimaoka that may represent grass blowing in the wind (my interpretation).

Another interesting feature in this plate's design are the precise white borders separating the rim and center field areas and also separating the 3 medallions from the blue area in the center. There seems to be a sense of harmony that is introduced with this detail.

There are no chips or cracks. It is signed with his later cypher that has a curved tail. The box lid is also signed. This is a fairly large piece at 9 1/4" (23.5 cm) Diameter x 1 1/2" (3.8 cm) Height.
